Annual Fee and Welcome Benefits

The Axis Bank Magnus for Burgundy Credit Card comes with an annual fee of ₹30,000 + GST, totaling ₹35,400. The card offers a one-time welcome benefit in the form of a Luxe Gift Card, a Postcard Hotels voucher, or a one-way economy domestic flight ticket, all valued at ₹5,000. However, this benefit is only applicable to new applications and not to upgrades. The card does not offer any renewal benefits for the years to come, making the annual fee feel heavy unless you make full use of the other lifestyle perks offered with the card, as it also does not offer any spend-based fee waivers.

On the other hand, the HDFC Infinia Credit Card has a slightly lower annual fee of ₹12,500 + GST (₹14,750 in total), which can be waived by spending ₹10 lakh in a card anniversary year. The card offers 12,500 bonus reward points as a welcome benefit, which can be redeemed for travel bookings through SmartBuy. This effectively offsets the annual fee, making the HDFC Infinia a more attractive option in terms of joining fee and welcome benefits.

Earning and Redeeming Reward Points

The Axis Bank Magnus for Burgundy card follows a rewards structure based on the spending of the user. Cardholders earn 12 EDGE Reward Points per ₹200 spent on all transactions up to ₹1.5 lakh in a calendar month. Once spending crosses that threshold, the reward rate increases to 35 EDGE Points per ₹200, but only for additional spends up to the card’s credit limit + ₹1.5 lakh. After this, the rate drops back to 12 points per ₹200.  Additionally, users can earn 5X EDGE Points on bookings made via the Axis Travel EDGE Portal for expenses of up to ₹2 lakh per month.

EDGE Reward points can be redeemed against shopping vouchers and products, and users can convert 5 EDGE Points into 4 Partner Miles. Air mile conversions improve the value of collected points.

HDFC Infinia Credit Cardholders earn a flat 5 Reward Points for every ₹150 spent, with accelerated 10X points available on purchases made via HDFC SmartBuy, including flights, hotels, Amazon, Flipkart, and more. There is a monthly cap of 15,000 points on 10X earnings.

HDFC Reward Points can be redeemed at a 1:1 value (₹1 per point) for flight and hotel bookings through SmartBuy. Users can also convert points into airline miles with a range of partners, or use them for gift vouchers, merchandise, and cash back.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for Axis Magnus for Burgundy, individuals need to maintain a high Total Relationship Value (TRV) with Axis Bank. The card is targeted at high-net-worth individuals who already have an established relationship with the bank. You can qualify by maintaining an average quarterly balance of ₹10 lakh across your savings and current accounts. Alternatively, Axis also considers a metric called Total Relationship Value (TRV) at the individual customer ID level. This includes balances across savings accounts, current accounts, term deposits, recurring deposits, and investment relationships such as mutual funds, life insurance, private equity, PMS, NPS, RBI bonds, and more. You meet the TRV requirement if you maintain either:

  • ₹30 lakh across your savings and current accounts, or
  • ₹1 crore across your savings, current, and demat holdings.

For salaried individuals, you can qualify by receiving a monthly salary credit of ₹3 lakh or more into your Axis Bank salary account. For NRIs, eligibility requires having received a foreign inward remittance of at least ₹40 lakh via wire transfer.

The HDFC Infinia Credit Card is generally considered slightly more accessible than the Magnus for Burgundy. While you can’t apply for it directly, many existing HDFC customers receive upgrade offers to Infinia from cards like Regalia, depending on their spending credit profile. You should have a very good credit history and an existing relationship with HDFC Bank. The Total Relationship Value (TRV) should exceed ₹25 lakh.

Bottom Line

Both the Axis Bank Magnus for Burgundy and the HDFC Infinia Credit Card are designed for high-net-worth individuals, offering premium lifestyle and travel benefits. However, HDFC Infinia is the better overall choice due to its lower annual fee, spend-based waiver, superior reward rate, and more flexible redemption options, including a 1:1 value for travel bookings via SmartBuy. The Magnus for Burgundy offers excellent value for air miles conversions, giving you four partner miles for every 5 EDGE Reward Points, which is a unique advantage for frequent flyers. However, other than the conversion rate that Magnus Burgundy offers for partner airmiles (5:4), HDFC Infinia seems like a better choice.
