American Express is one of the most premium and sought-after credit card issuers in India. In March 2025, they temporarily stopped accepting new applications, citing system upgrade requirements, specifically “integrate new platforms for our domestic Card issuing operations”. Now, American Express Cards are once again open for applications in India. Those who wish to apply can seize this opportunity and begin their rewarding journey.
Currently, new applications are only open for the Platinum Reserve and Platinum Charge Credit Card.
AmEx saw a significant decline in the number of active credit cards during the period of the halt. This can be attributed to the referral program, which was temporarily discontinued. But now, since applications are once again open, the issuer shall witness increased numbers.
Which American Express Credit Card Can You Apply For?
Even though American Express has reopened applications for new credit cards, at present, only its two most premium offerings, the Platinum Charge and Platinum Reserve Credit Cards, are available. The usual portfolio, including popular cards like Gold, MRCC, and SmartEarn, remains closed for new applications for now.

It was speculated for quite some time that American Express would resume applications in September, and now that has proven to be true. However, applications came up live later than everyone expected. While existing AmEx Credit Card holders were unaffected during the pause, those without a card were unable to apply. With applications now open again and a referral offer available, new customers can once again take advantage of the exclusive benefits offered by American Express Credit Cards.
For now, new applicants can only apply for American Express’s two most premium cards, the Platinum Charge and the Platinum Reserve Credit Card.
